Dmytro Čyževs’kyj in Prague: Contribution to the Biography of the Scholar

This article draws upon unpublished correspondence between Dmytro Čyževs’kyj (1894–1977) and Ferdinande Homann (1900–1944). Like Čyževs’kyj, Homann was a student of Husserl; they met in Freiburg (Breisgau), and during Čyževs’kyj’s stay in Prague (1923–1932), their friendship developed into a love affair. An analysis of Čyževs’kyj’s correspondence with Homann reveals a wealth of information, including his assessments of acquaintances, his literary preferences, his psychological state, and his scholarly aspirations. Čyževs’kyj also writes very frankly about the internal and external conflicts he encountered in Prague. The external conflicts were connected with the scholar’s complex relationship with Prague itself as a city, discussions with Czech, Russian, and Ukrainian philosophers, and with the Ukrainian émigré community. As well as the external conflicts mentioned above, there were also internal conflicts, including illnesses and doubts about the relevance of his chosen profession. This ultimately led to a transition from philosophy to philology (philosophical Slavic studies).
